Retro Boards One of the highlights over the last few years has been the introduction of a Retro division for boards constructed in the late 60’s and through out the 70’s. With boards from this era being experimental with single fins and twinnies becoming radically short, surfers became involved in developing a whole new frontier. This has seen the emergence of contests where the competitors assemble to compare “Retro Boards” tell stories and generally have a good time. These retro enthusiasts come from both the traditional longboard surfer as well as the more modern shortboarder resulting with competitors competing with a exhibitionists aplomb rather than to a set criteria aimed at finding a winner.
Thanks to Shawline Plumbing there is a thousand dollars up in prizemoney for this year’s Retro division to be shared among the finalists.
Nick Shaw from Shawline Plumbing said “We love watching the guys rip on the Retro Boards, especially some of the locals like Cameron Gleave and Mitch James, so we decided to get behind the Malfunction and help with the Retro division. Its great having this event here in Kingscliff and good for the whole Tweed Coast.”
A selection of boards will be supplied by the Carl Tanner Collection for competitors to choose from to ensure they have the right board for their heat.

Put it on in the presence of the Marshall, then at the direction of the announcer, you can enter the water [usually with five minutes to go]. Keep your jersey on until you come back to the Marshall. This is essential as photos are taken at all times. On the paddle out, please keep well clear of the competitors in the current heat. Note that the surfboard specifications are retro boards must have been constructed prior to the Simon Anderson thruster era in 1981. Single and twin fins are accepted. A selection of boards will be available for use thanks to the Carl Tanner Collection. The contest director will have the final say on any disputes. Arena: The contest arena will be clearly marked by 2 flags. Surfing either side of the flags will not be judged. Competitors in other heats are to stay clear of the contest arena at all times or will risk being disqualified from the contest.

JUDGING CRITERIA Surfers must perform to the ASP Judging Key Concepts to maximize their scoring potential.
Judges analyze the following major concepts when scoring waves: Commitment and Degree of Difficulty - Combination of Traditional and Modern Manoeuvres - Innovative and Progressive Manoeuvres - Combination of Major Manoeuvres - Variety of Manoeuvres - Speed, Power and Flow
Judges will utilize a 75-25% ratio being that surfers will only ever get a maximum of 75% (7.5pts) of the scale for surfing only one aspect of Modern or Traditional, up to an additional 25% (2.5pts) can be added when the two aspects are combined. Incomplete maneuvers will not be rewarded.
It is important to note that the emphasis on certain concepts is contingent upon the location and the conditions on the day, as well as changes of conditions during the day.
Scale Utilized: 0.0 – 1.9 = Poor, 2.0 – 2.9 = Fair, 4.0 – 5.9 = Average, 6.0 – 7.9 = Good, 8.0 – 10.0 = Excellent |
