2007 Malfunction
Williams and Pioli win big at Malfunction
Surf Fest 2007

Harrison Roach : photo Snapperrocks.com.au
In pumping 1 to 2 metre waves at Rainbow Bay,
Coolangatta, Wollongong's Dane Pioli, 22 years old, and now Gold Coast based
at Snapper Rocks, took out the highly competitive 2007 Malfunction Surf
Festival Surftech Open Mens Professional Title Pioli found the two best
waves in the final using tube rides and huge air drop floaters on his 9 ft
longboard to hold back the Sunshine Coasts Harrison Roach who scored a
perfect 10 on his opening wave. However, Harrison was unable to find a high
scoring second ride needing an 8 to overtake Pioli, while Coffs Harbour's
Jared Neal was playing catch up surfing on his backhand scoring an 8 point
ride in the dying minutes. Fellow Coffs Harbour pro Paul Scholten scored an
8 point ride, but like Roach the Coffs Harbour boys could not back up for a
high scoring second ride. This is Pioli's first Malfunction win in the 1
Star WLT/5 Star ALC Surftech Open Mens Professional. Pioli collected a
$2500 cheque for first prize.
In the Surftech Open Womens Professional Title, Chelsea Williams, 21 years
old, from Tweed Heads has had an unbeaten run in 2007 and this continued
with a sensational display of outstanding backhand tube rides and big
backhand re-entries to win her fourth professional title in a row for 2007
and her second final in the 2007 Malfunction Surf Festival, having won the
Bic One Board Challenge (Wednesday). Defending champion, Kirsty Webster
(Tweed Heads), surfed a great final but was unable to score as highly as
Chelsea. Crystal Gersback (Gold Coast) finished third, and Byron Bay's

BIC
One Board
Challenge
The 2007 surfing program starts on Wednesday
May 9th with the running of the BIC One Board Challenge. The
concept of the Bic Challenge was conceived in July of 2000 when ex-world
surfing champion, Nat Young and Bic Sport introduced the first ever
One-Design surfing
contest at the Biarritz Surf Festival as a display event. The Bic Challenge
surf contest
series is unique in that every competitor surfs on one
of two possible surfboard shapes
right
throughout the event.
RESULTS
Golden Breed Retro
In recent
years there has been a huge resurgence in the surfing of boards constructed
in
the
late 60’s and through out the 70’s. This together with a new clothing
culture has
seen the emergence of contests where the competitors
assemble to compare “Retro
Boards” tell stories and generally have a good time.
The whole of Thursday has been
devoted to the Golden Breed Retro.

Golden Breed
Surf Vehicle Rally
Surfers have always used whatever they could
get paws on to get them to the beach. From '38 Ford’s, to the Woody, from 64
EH Holden’s to mums taxi. All have been the symbol of surf
transportation.
An assortment of these classic surfers
vehicles will assemble at the Spit on the Northern End of the Gold Coast at 8am.
Vehicles will depart from the assembly point at the Spit in lots
of 10, at 5 minute intervals. The vehicles will drive along Seaworld Dr then
Waterways Dr to the Gold Coast Hwy and would then cruise down the Gold Coast
Hwy to
Coolangatta. At Coolangatta the route would take the vehicles along
Marine Parade and over Greenmount Hill to Rainbow Bay. At Rainbow Bay the
vehicles would turn right
into Ward St then travel over the NSW/Qld border
to park at a reserved area in the old Border Caravan Park where they will be
on display to mid afternoon.
The public are invited to vote on what they consider
to be the most classic surf wagon on display.
The winning vehicle was Allan Bakers Kombi
