National Surfing Reserve - Yallingup One of the greatest regions for West Australian surfers over the last 50 years has been Yallingup. Located at the northern end of the Margaret River region Yallingup has hosted and bred many of the region's and world's greatest surfers. Most of the early WA surfers started as clubbies in Perth with a few of the more adventurous ones venturing to the South West around 1954. Now home to a relaxed local surf orientated community, Yallingup, an aboriginal word meaning "Place of Love" has been dedicated as a National Surfing Reserve. Complete with a statute of a surfer to recognise the first 1950's surfers whom came to Yallingup and camped under the bushes + surfed Yalls .. Those surfers over years came to love Yalls and moved there to surf / live / work etc ... and a plaque acknowledging the Wardandi people as the traditional carers of the area, Yallingup was official dedicated in a ceremony attended by many of the elders of the Yallingup surfing community last Saturday. |
